To bury the late Igwe of Otu land, a gathering of elders must send someone into the forbidden forest for the ancestral cream, and it is Utobo, a loud volunteer deaf to his wife and daughter's pleas, who takes the mission. In Tycoon Of The Forest: Utobo The King Of The Forest, he and the brave Wagu face tests set by spirits while the village waits in anxious vigil. Seven days later Utobo returns clutching a pot of cream, only to discover that Wagu has already delivered the cream, the Igwe is buried, and another man has been crowned king—leaving Utobo to dump his offering on the shrine floor in front of the elders.

Storyline

In Otu land, the elders cannot lay the late Igwe to rest until the ancestral cream is fetched from the forbidden forest, and the argument over who must risk the spirits turns volatile. Utobo, a man loud with ambition, volunteers over the desperate pleas of his wife and daughter, and a native doctor binds him in protective charms with strict instructions to follow his flute along the dangerous path. This is the mission at the heart of Tycoon Of The Forest: Utobo The King Of The Forest, one that Utobo undertakes alongside Wagu, another man willing to brave the dark. The forest tests both men in turn: an old woman measures their courage, a blind elder who already knows their purpose points them to a hut filled with vessels of gold and silver, and a wise one grants the ancestral cream and the staff of office to whichever successor the spirits choose. Back in the village, families keep vigil and count the days, knowing the burial cannot happen until someone emerges from the trees. After seven days, Utobo emerges clutching a pot of cream, but the homecoming brings no honor. Wagu has already returned with cream, the Igwe has been buried, and another man has been crowned in Utobo's place. Utobo storms into the elders' assembly, hurls his pot to the ground in front of the shrine, and accuses the whole village of betrayal, insisting his cream alone could serve twenty generations. His threat is direct: the spirits of the forest will plague Otu land because of this slight. The elders, shaking at both the desecration and the fury, gather the dead animals scattered around the shrine and begin a cleansing ceremony, even as they acknowledge that the land now carries a heavy burden. That acknowledgment hangs over everything, because the dispute over the crown has cracked the village's confidence in its own leaders. The cleansing ceremony is performed, but the future of Otu land remains uncertain, with Utobo's anger and the spirits' displeased.
