Biography
EARLY LIFE
Damson Idris was born Adamson Alade-Bo Idris on 2 September 1991 in Peckham, South East London, to a Nigerian family of Yoruba descent. He is the youngest of six children (three older brothers and two older sisters). His mother, often referred to as Philippa or Silifat (an entrepreneur who immigrated from Oyo State, Nigeria, in the 1980s), raised him largely as a single parent and is frequently cited by him as his greatest inspiration and “ultimate hero.” She worked multiple jobs while supporting the family and is remembered for dressing him in stylish three-piece suits as a child. He was named after his grandfather, Adam Alade Idris. Growing up on the North Peckham estate, he initially aspired to a professional football career (dreaming of becoming “the next Lionel Messi” or similar stars) and also played rugby. In 2002, he shook hands with Queen Elizabeth II when his team participated in her Golden Jubilee celebrations. A knee injury and other factors shifted his path away from sports. His older siblings pursued careers in banking, law, IT, and business, giving him leeway as the youngest to explore creative fields.
CAREER
Idris began in theatre. While studying at Brunel University, he was encouraged by actress Cathy Tyson to audition for Ade Solanke’s play Pandora’s Box, which led to an agent and further stage work (including productions at Finborough Theatre, Arcola Theatre, Pilot Theatre, Tobacco Factory Theatre, and the Royal National Theatre). He trained at Identity School of Acting alongside actors such as John Boyega, Letitia Wright, and Malachi Kirby. Early television credits included Miranda (2013), Doctors (2015), and Casualty (2015). His breakthrough came with the lead role of Franklin Saint, an ambitious young drug dealer navigating the 1980s crack epidemic in Los Angeles, in John Singleton’s FX series Snowfall (2017–2023). He auditioned via video from London and worked intensively on the South Central LA accent (with guidance from rapper WC). The performance earned widespread critical praise and multiple award nominations/wins, including NAACP Image Awards, BET Awards (Best Actor win in 2023), Black Reel Awards, and MOBO Awards. Film credits include City of Tiny Lights (2016), Megan Leavey (2017), The Commuter (2018), Astral (2018), the lead in Farming (2018; Best Actor in a British Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival), Outside the Wire (2021), and F1 (2025, as Joshua Pearce opposite Brad Pitt; the film received significant awards attention). He has also appeared in Black Mirror (“Smithereens,” 2019), The Twilight Zone, and Swarm (2023). Upcoming projects include Children of Blood and Bone (as Prince Inan) and Miles & Juliette (as Miles Davis). In addition to acting, he works as a producer and has expanded into entrepreneurship. In 2025 he launched DIDRIS, a fine jewelry brand inspired by his mother’s entrepreneurial background in gold trading and real estate; he debuted pieces at the Met Gala. He has served as a brand ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger menswear and Prada.
PERSONAL LIFE
Idris maintains a relatively private personal life while remaining close to his family, particularly his mother. He has spoken warmly about her influence on his fashion sense, work ethic, and drive. He was in a high-profile relationship with American model and entrepreneur Lori Harvey (adopted daughter of Steve Harvey) beginning around late 2022. The couple publicly split in November 2023, stating they needed to focus on their individual paths while remaining friends with mutual respect. They were later spotted together on multiple occasions and reportedly rekindled the relationship in 2025 before splitting again around April 2026.
Idris frequently discusses themes of representation, ambition, systemic barriers, and the Black experience across different contexts. He has expressed a desire to “throw the rope back” for others from similar backgrounds and credits the late John Singleton as a major mentor. He remains grounded in his Nigerian-British identity and family values while building a global career in film, television, fashion, and business.
