Kokomma

After her father's death, a village girl sells vegetables under her aunt's care. In Kokomma, family friend Jane warns the aunt that men will trouble a beautiful girl and suggests sending her to Lagos. Money is tight, so the aunt agrees and sends Kokomma to Margaret's home. Margaret interviews her and warns against laziness. She promises to sponsor her education. Her husband Edet mutters they need no maid, and his friend Moses urges Edet to pursue her. When a staff member tries to force himself on Kokomma, Edet fires him. Edet starts his own harassment. He buys her a red dress and gold necklace, and he threatens that telling her aunt could cost her JAMB exam. That night he enters her room and she screams. He leaves. Usen, Margaret's son, returns home and befriends Kokomma. He offers to help her study. Margaret warns him not to get close to the house girl, and Edet agrees. Usen catches Edet assaulting Kokomma. Edet claims she seduced him. Usen turns on her until she tells him about months of harassment. Usen believes her and apologizes. He promises to stand by her. Edet lies again before Margaret, repeating his claim that Kokomma seduced him. Margaret wants to send Kokomma away, but Edet urges her to forgive the girl. Usen then reveals the secret gifts, and Margaret realizes the truth. She declares the marriage over and leaves with Usen and Kokomma. Edet finds Margaret's letter, which says his actions destroyed their home and that she has taken their son and Kokomma. She tells him to explain the situation to their families as best he can. He reads the letter and sets it down. He sits alone in grief.
