Storyline
In Out Of Time Ibinabo Benson watches her six-year-old son Zito lie in an ICU on life support for a severe heart defect. She has no family and no money. Her landlord Jennifer evicts her after six months of unpaid rent because every kobo has gone to medical bills. At the hospital Dr. Kenneth threatens to withdraw the ventilator unless she pays the mounting debt. Ibinabo kneels in the corridor and confesses she has no one to turn to. A compassionate doctor covers a week of care but the reprieve ends fast. She is forced into menial labor cleaning toilets cooking amala in a buka and washing laundry. Each job ends in humiliation or exploitation. The $40,000 needed for a transplant in India remains impossibly out of reach. Desperation drives her to accept an offer from a gang leader called Flower. She agrees to drive the getaway car for a robbery targeting the home of Engineer Mamoud a top government official. The operation collapses into gunfire and Mamoud's wife is murdered while gang members are killed. Ibinabo flees with the cash straight to the hospital only to learn her son died fifteen minutes before she arrived. She is arrested at the hospital gates clutching the blood-stained money and charged with armed robbery and murder. In custody she refuses to speak and repeats only that she needs to see her boy. Detective Francis and the DPO pressure her for names. Dr. Kenneth intervenes and testifies to her years of sacrifice and the impossibility of raising the surgery funds legally. He frames her as a victim of circumstance rather than a criminal. The case sparks a national outcry. Women across the country take to the streets chanting Free Ibinabo and sharing their own stories of desperation and neglect. News anchor Celia Benjamin amplifies the outcry and a GoFundMe organized by supporters surges past $50,000. In court the prosecution demands a harsh sentence to satisfy Engineer Mamoud.
