Najite Dede

EARLY LIFE

Najite Dede was born on 5 November 1971 in Germany to Nigerian parents. She hails from Delta State in south-southern Nigeria and belongs to the Ijaw ethnic group. Her father, Brownson Dede, was a Nigerian diplomat who served as envoy to Ethiopia. Her mother was involved in dancing, which helped foster an early appreciation for the arts in the family. She grew up in an influential household that emphasized respect for people of all statuses. Najite is the elder sister of actress and television presenter Michelle Dede. She is also a cousin to veteran Nollywood actor Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD). The family environment encouraged her interest in performance from a young age.

CAREER

Najite Dede is a Nigerian actress, director, and theatre practitioner with a career spanning film, television, stage, and musicals. Although she studied law at the University of Ibadan, she realized early that she did not want to practice it and pursued theatre instead. She later earned a postgraduate diploma in Theatre Arts from the same university, specializing in directing with a minor in choreography. She has shown versatility across roles and has worked both in front of and behind the camera. Notable film and television credits include Can of Worms (1999), 30 Days (2006, as Temilola Brisbee), Small Boy (2008, as Aina), Gidi Up (2013, as Ade), Ojo’s in d’ House (2013, as Elizabeth Ojo), Ordinary People (2014, as Aunty Rose), The Governor (2016, as Elizabeth; also served as second assistant director), It’s Her Day (2016, as Fowey), Gone Nine Months (2017, as Agnes Olajuwon), Unbroken (2019–2020, as Ofure Jangfa), Riona (2020, as Arenyeka), The House of Secrets (2023, as Sarah), Grown (2024, as Mrs. Aje), MTV Shuga, Prince of Savannah, Love Notes (2024, as Tami), and others. She also worked as assistant director on Flower Girl (2013). On stage and in musicals, she has performed in productions including Mamma Mia, Heartbeat the Musical, High, V Monologues (formerly Vagina Monologues, which she directed), The Upside Your Head Show, All About Ere, Her Majesty’s Return, King Must Dance Naked, and Shylock. She is recognized for her commitment to theatre collaboration and storytelling. In 2020, she received a nomination at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) related to Unbroken (alongside Efa Iwara).
