Yaaba

In a small, remote village in rural Burkina Faso, 10-year-old Bila strikes up an unlikely friendship with Sana, an elderly, fiercely independent woman. Because she is completely alone and her past is shrouded in tragedy, the superstitious villagers falsely blame her for every local misfortune and brand her a "witch". Refusing to participate in their hatred, Bila affectionately calls her "Yaaba" (grandmother). When Bila's young cousin, Nopoko, falls dangerously ill with tetanus, the local medicine men fail to cure her. Despite the community’s cruel rejection, it is Sana’s resourcefulness and secret knowledge of traditional medicine that ultimately saves the young girl's life.
