Storyline
Prince Carlo returns from the United States to bury his father and resume his medical career abroad. The Queen Mother and the council of elders confront him immediately and insist he must assume the throne of Okpanam by tradition. They warn that a previous heir who abdicated died mysteriously within seven market days. Carlo resists furiously and insists he has a life in America, but the pressure mounts until he reluctantly accepts the mantle and is crowned King Kalu Usimiri. As king he faces pressure to marry a woman from the kingdom, and he reveals his fiancée Sophie, an American-based woman he loves deeply. The Queen Mother and the elders forbid a non-indigene marriage and select Mbechi, the daughter of Chief Odi, as his bride. Mbechi arrives at the palace for a compulsory two-week assessment and struggles with modern facilities, and a humiliating chamber pot incident leads to her public flogging. Kalu treats her with cold cruelty, yet later shows fleeting kindness when she falls ill. Meanwhile Ogechi, Mbechi's friend, berates Chief Odi for sending his daughter into such degradation. The Queen Mother pleads for mercy, but Kalu insists tradition must run its course. At a formal gathering of the council King Kalu delivers a sweeping address and abolishes the ancient law requiring the king to marry from Okpanam, declaring every man's right to choose his partner. Turning to Mbechi he confesses his heart belongs to Sophie and terminates their marital arrangement. Mbechi collapses in grief and begs him to reconsider, but Kalu remains resolute and offers only distant royal protection. The Queen Mother condemns his cruelty and warns that Mbechi may never recover. Mbechi leaves the palace stripped of her royal prospects. Sophie arrives at the palace gates and she and Kalu embrace passionately after the ordeal. They walk together toward the house united as the film ends.
