Ibrahim Yekini

Yekini has emphasized practical experience, mentorship, and continuous self-training as key to filmmaking success. He has spoken about once working as a bricklayer to fund equipment and about owning or running a performing-arts school to train others. He remains active as both an on-screen performer and a behind-the-scenes creative force in Yoruba Nollywood, contributing to the commercial and cultural visibility of the sector.

EARLY LIFE

Ibrahim Yekini was born in Bariga, Lagos State. Although born in Lagos, he spent a significant portion of his formative years in northern Nigeria, particularly Kano State, where he completed his primary and secondary education. He is of Yoruba heritage with roots tied to Ogun State (Abeokuta/Lafenwa area). He trained as a boxer in his younger years before fully committing to acting. In 1998 he began a formal apprenticeship with the Folorunsho Adejobi theatre group in Iju Ishaga, Lagos, spending about two to three years learning stage performance, discipline, and traditional theatrical techniques. This apprenticeship laid the foundation for his later work in Yoruba cinema.

CAREER

Yekini entered professional acting through theatre apprenticeship in the late 1990s. His first notable screen appearance was in 2000 in the Yoruba film Dapo Tori Ti E, in which he played a criminal. He gradually moved from supporting roles into producing and directing. His first major production was titled Itele, from which he derived his popular stage name. He learned directing under Don Richard (collaborating on projects such as Ekun Meta). A major breakthrough came with Kesari (2018) and especially Return of Kesari (which he wrote, produced, and co-directed), elevating his profile as a multi-hyphenate filmmaker. He has appeared in or contributed to numerous films, including Omo Ghetto: The Saga (2020), King of Thieves (2022), JBO (Jaguda Baba Ole) (2023), A Tribe Called Judah (2023), Jagun Jagun (2023), Lisabi (2024), Dolapo Douglas (2024), Koleoso (2025), and others. He is known for intense, often morally complex or action-oriented characters and has worked with major Yoruba Nollywood talents. Awards include Best Actor in a Lead Role at the Best of Nollywood Awards (for Lucifer, 2020, and earlier recognition), City People Entertainment Awards (Producer of the Year and Best Movie for Kesari-related work), and Nollywood Producer of the Year at the Emperor Awards (for Koleoso). He received an AMVCA nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Jagun Jagun. Koleoso achieved significant YouTube viewership milestones.

PERSONAL LIFE

Yekini is married to Olayiwola Aminat Omowunmi (Wunmi). The couple married or formalized their relationship around June 2016 and have children together, including a daughter named Ameerat Bakare (born around 2018) and another daughter born in April 2022. He was previously married to Dupe Yekini; that marriage ended in divorce and produced children. Public reports and social-media discussions have referenced additional family responsibilities, including children from earlier relationships, along with periods of controversy regarding support and paternal involvement. He has addressed some of these matters publicly, at times acknowledging shortcomings and later demonstrating efforts at reconciliation. He is a Muslim and has spoken about faith, responsibility, and the challenges of balancing a demanding career with family life. In 2026 he and his wife celebrated acquiring a home in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
