Biography

EARLY LIFE

Adebayo Salami, popularly known as Oga Bello, hails from Pakata Oloje in Ilorin, Kwara State. He was born on May 9, 1952, in Lagos State, where he completed both his primary and secondary education. He later studied at Adebodun Commercial School and trained at the Lagos Drama School, affiliated with the University of Lagos.

CAREER

Salami began acting in 1964 with the Young Concert Party, led by the late Ojo Ladipo (Baba Mero). The group eventually became the Ojo Ladipo Theatre Group and later evolved into the renowned Awada Kerikeri Theatre Group. When Ojo Ladipo passed away in 1978, Salami assumed leadership of the group, which elevated his status in the industry. He played a key role in Nigeria’s first Yoruba film, Ajani Ogun, and later starred in Kadara, produced by Adeyemi Afolayan. Salami gained household recognition in the TV series Comedy Half Hour, where he portrayed the beloved character Oga Bello. In 1985, he produced his debut film, Ogun Ajaye, under Awada Kerikeri. Since then, he has continued to act, produce, and direct numerous influential Yoruba films. Salami also helped establish the Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners and served as its president.

PERSONAL LIFE

Salami is married to two wives and has eighteen children, including well-known actor Femi Adebayo. He continues to serve as a mentor and icon in Nollywood and Yoruba cinema.
