Storyline
The movie "Arugba (The Vessel)" starts with Omitola getting ready to leave her house. Her friends call her the votary virgin with respect. She visits her grandmother who blesses her and warns her not to let any man distract her from her sacred role. Love, the grandmother says, is a dark path. Ade is in love with Omitola. He tries to talk to her by the river but she sends him away. Her friends also warn him to leave her alone because she is a sacred person. Ade does not give up. He even comes to her house. Omitola threatens to release her dog on him. After thinking about Ade’s persistence, Omitola starts to fall in love with him. During the festival of the river goddess, Omitola carries the sacred calabash as the votary virgin. Ade sees her there. After the festival, Omitola calls Ade and apologizes for being rude. They start dating. Omitola becomes deeply in love and decides to leave her sacred duties. She moves to Lagos to live with Ade without telling her family. When her family finds out she is missing, her grandmother is very sad. Omitola tells her she is in Lagos. In Lagos, Ade shows Omitola a rich life. She becomes pregnant. But one day Ade’s first wife, Becca, who is also pregnant, finds out about Omitola. Becca comes with Aunty Seki to the house and tells Omitola to leave. Omitola is shocked and heartbroken. Omitola realizes she has made a big mistake by abandoning the river goddess and disobeying her grandmother. She returns to the river to ask the goddess for forgiveness. Ade follows her and tries to apologize but Omitola refuses. She now understands her grandmother’s warning about love. The movie ends with Omitola rejecting Ade and choosing to return to her traditional path.
