Old Habits

In Old Habits, Boye, a romance writer, spends an intimate evening with Ruby, then wakes her and sends her away at dawn, claiming his wife is on the way. His brother David brings flowers and reminds him to find a date for David's engagement party to Hadiza. Boye takes yellow tulips to Ruby, his new neighbor and a gynecologist recently transferred from Abuja, and she agrees to go with him. They prepare together, and she helps him tie his tie. At the party, Ruby meets Hadiza, and a toast goes to Hadiza as the birthday girl. Boye is reunited with his ex-wife Tems, a sex therapist. His editor Ryan thinks his latest manuscript lacks heat and passion, and Tems offers to help him revise it. Tems and Boye work together, spending long hours at his home and revisiting the restaurant where they had their first date. They rekindle their physical relationship. Ruby, who has developed feelings for Boye, grows uneasy as he becomes secretive. At the engagement party for David and Hadiza, Tems and Hadiza argue, and Ruby overhears Tems tell Hadiza that Boye is still in love with her and that his new book is about their relationship. Ruby feels betrayed. She confronts Boye outside and asks if he truly loves Tems, then drives off in tears despite his attempts to stop her. Inside, Hadiza admits she read a text Boye sent David about his encounter with Tems. She calls Boye a liability, so David defends him and tells how Boye took him in after David's parents died. David questions whether he wants to marry someone so controlling. Boye finds Tems in the garden and tells her she has always been the one he loves. He goes down on one knee and begs for another chance, and she embraces him, promising their love is not over. David and Hadiza reconcile and decide to work through their issues in therapy. Ruby learns that two other women have come forward against Dr. Hassan, her former harasser, so she decides to return to Abuja.
