Storyline

Set in the 1840s and 1850s, the movie vividly recreates the pre-colonial kingdom of Lagos, capturing its vibrant cultural heritage, intricate palace court politics, and strategic economic importance. The production design meticulously rebuilds the ancient palace (Iga Idunganran), bustling coastal markets, and traditional warships, setting a grand stage for a defining moment in Nigerian history. The narrative centers on the bitter royal feud between Kosoko and his uncle, Oba Akitoye. When Akitoye ascends the throne with the backing of British merchants and anti-slavery factions, the exiled Kosoko builds a powerful coalition of local chiefs and foreign traders. He successfully stages a coup to seize the crown, initiating a reign defined by fierce independence. However, the British Empire refuses to lose its foothold on the coast. Utilizing the enforcement of the anti-slavery treaty as a geopolitical weapon, the British align with the deposed Akitoye. This sets off a ticking clock toward an inevitable military invasion.
