Call Me Queen
Set in Nairobi in 1999, "Call Me Queen" is a powerful female-empowerment drama based on Lara Santoro’s 2007 novel Mercy. The story follows Quinta "Queen" Achungo, a 30-year-old Rwandan single mother living in one of Nairobi's largest slums. After talking her way into a housekeeping job for Anna, a self-destructive Irish journalist struggling with grief, the two form an unlikely and deeply transformative bond.
Storyline
The narrative shifts dramatically when Queen is diagnosed with HIV during the height of the 1990s country-wide AIDS crisis. Confronted by systemic inequality, poverty, and corporate greed, Queen and Anna join forces to challenge powerful pharmaceutical companies and corrupt authorities who are withholding life-saving medications from impoverished African communities. It highlights an empowering fight for survival, health access, and solidarity inspired by real-life Kenyan women activists.
