'76
'76 moves beyond typical war action to explore the emotional cost of conflict, the pressure faced by soldiers, and the strength of women living within military barracks. Set against the political and tribal tensions of 1970s Nigeria, the story follows Suzy, whose family strongly opposes her marriage to Dewa, a soldier from a different region. Their personal struggle becomes more dangerous when Dewa’s close friend, Major Gomos, tries to convince him to support a deadly coup. After a political assassination takes place, the story shifts into a tense investigation as Dewa is caught between his loyalty to his friend, his marriage, and the growing crisis around him.
Storyline
Set in 1976, six years after the devastating Nigerian Civil War, '76 follows Captain Joseph Dewa, a young army officer from the Middle Belt, and his heavily pregnant wife, Suzy, from the Southeastern region. Their inter-tribal love story is put to the ultimate test when a group of disgruntled military officers launches a bloody, unsuccessful coup d'état that leads to the real-life assassination of Nigeria's beloved Head of State, General Murtala Mohammed. Having previously refused to join the plotters, Captain Dewa finds himself falsely accused, arrested, and court-martialed. With time running out, his devoted wife must race against the military system to prove his innocence and save him from the firing squad.
