Richard Lawson builds a successful life until his personal assistant Lela, obsessed with bearing his child, spikes a drink intended for his girlfriend Sonia at a club. Richard drinks it by mistake and spends the night with a stranger, Idara. Weeks later Idara, with a friend's help, tracks him down using a jacket he left behind and announces her pregnancy at his family home. Richard dismisses the child as a silly mistake, refusing responsibility, but his formidable mother Harriet intervenes, decreeing that Idara will stay in the house and carry the baby to term. Sonia is humiliated but remains after Richard pleads for a chance to make things right, promising the arrangement is temporary. Lela manipulates events from the shadows, sowing discord between the women and eventually poisoning Idara's food. Idara is hospitalized, rendered mute by trauma, and loses the baby. She declares she alone is entitled to bear Richard's child and intends to keep him captive indefinitely. Harriet alerts the police, who storm the location, arrest Lela, and rescue Richard. In the chaos Harriet asserts her claim over her son, shattering Lela's delusions.
