Ibinabo Fiberesima

EARLY LIFE

Ibinabo Fiberesima was born on 13 January 1970 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to a Nigerian father (from Okrika a medical doctor) and an Irish mother. She is of mixed heritage and has described strong cultural ties to both her Ijaw/Okrika roots and Yoruba ancestry through her paternal grandmother. She is the second child in a family of six. She began her education at the Y.M.C.A. Play Centre in Port Harcourt and completed secondary school at Federal Government Girls College, New Bussa, Niger State. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature from the University of Ibadan and later obtained a Master’s degree in Audio Visual Management from the Media Business School in Ronda, Spain.

CAREER

Fiberesima began as a model and beauty pageant contestant. Key achievements include: Winner of Miss Wonderland (1990) First runner-up, Miss Nigeria (1991 and 1997) Second runner-up, Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) in multiple editions (including 1992 and 1998) Winner of Miss Wonderful (1997) First runner-up, Miss NUGA (1990) She is the National Director of Miss Earth Nigeria (a role she has held since the early 2000s) and has been involved with other pageants. Her acting debut came in the 1998 action thriller Most Wanted (as Sparkle). She has appeared in numerous Nollywood films, including Mortal Sin (2003), The Ghost (2005), Letters to a Stranger (2007), St. Mary (2014), ’76 (2016), The Twin Sword, Camouflage, 2 Face, A Night in the Philippines, Pastor’s Wife, and others. She has also directed films such as Miebaka and Along Came a Butterfly. She made history as the first female President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN). She has worked as an event manager and brand ambassador (including for Air Peace and Image Make-Up Nigeria) and remains active in storytelling focused on Niger Delta culture and heritage.

PERSONAL LIFE

Fiberesima married businessman Uche Benjamin Ugbuka (Uche Egbuka) in a traditional and white wedding ceremony in December 2014. The marriage ended after about two years. She is a mother of three biological children (two sons and one daughter). Her daughter Zino is with filmmaker Fred Amata; one of her sons, Sean Leam, has been involved in football in the UK. She has also adopted children and has spoken about the challenges and joys of single motherhood and family life. She has publicly discussed periods of depression linked to a 2006 car accident and subsequent legal battles, as well as her recovery and focus on family, culture, and personal growth. She maintains an interest in environmental issues, swimming, reading, cooking, and travel.

In 2006, Fiberesima was involved in a car accident in which a man named Giwa Suraj died. She was charged with manslaughter and reckless driving. In March 2016 a Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced her to a five-year jail term and she was removed as AGN President; she was granted bail by the Court of Appeal in April 2016 pending further appeal. She has spoken about the profound personal and professional impact of the case and her path to healing. Ibinabo Fiberesima continues to work in film, pageantry, and cultural advocacy, with a particular passion for Niger Delta stories and environmental causes. She is recognised as a trailblazing figure as the first woman to lead the Actors Guild of Nigeria.
