Saga arrives on a donkey at his Burkina Faso village after two years away and blows a horn to announce himself. His uncle Kougpoko greets him and reveals that his father Tenga has taken Nogma as a wife, though she had been promised to Saga. Saga's brother Kougri confirms the marriage in a tense confrontation, and Saga storms into the desert. That night Saga and Nogma meet secretly and confess a love that defies custom. She explains her family forced her into the union. Village elders perform a stick divination that foretells trouble, and a group of men with torches surrounds Saga's hut to warn him the affair is known. In the ensuing chaos Tenga hangs himself, and the village blames Saga, who flees. Nogma is publicly accused by her father-in-law, who orders her capture. She collapses in the field and is brought to her aunt's hut for safety. The village gathers for Tenga's funeral, where Kougri confronts Saga and accuses him of dishonoring the family. A white-robed elder banishes Saga, declaring it his fault, and Saga walks away into the arid plains. Nogma, now pregnant, decides to leave the village with her sister Kuilga and a young boy. They pass Kougri on the path, but he ignores them. News arrives that Koudpoko has died, deepening the mourning. Wandering alone, Saga finds refuge with his aunt Bore, who welcomes him. He later discovers Nogma collapsed in the field and carries her to the aunt's compound. The elder woman blesses their union and speaks words of acceptance. In the final scenes Saga and Nogma ride away together on a donkey, leaving the village behind as the credits roll over the vast dry expanse.
