Storyline

The story takes place during ulwaluko (a real-life, highly secretive mountain initiation rite marking the passage of Xhosa boys into manhood). Xolani, a quiet, lonely warehouse worker, travels from the city each year to serve as an ikhankatha (caregiver) to the teenage initiates. He uses this time to secretly reunite with his childhood friend and intense, volatile lover, Vija. This year, Xolani is assigned to mentor Kwanda, a wealthy, observant, and defiant teenager from Johannesburg whose father sent him to the camp because he is deemed "too soft". In an environment thick with hyper-masculinity and machismo, Kwanda quickly notices the forbidden bond between Xolani and Vija. As Kwanda challenges the patriarchal structures of the ritual, he forces Xolani to confront his hidden identity, setting off a dangerous chain reaction that threatens their safety and place in the community.
