After matric he studied marketing at Cape Town College. In 2009 he moved to Johannesburg to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. He remained deeply connected to his Eastern Cape roots and family. His father passed away around 2008–2009. He was very close to his mother, Nomawethu Mseleni, whom he supported financially (including helping fix/build her home in Fort Beaufort in 2016) and spoke to nearly every day. He also acted as a provider and father figure to his younger brother, Liyema.
CAREER
Mseleni began his screen career with guest and supporting roles after moving to Johannesburg. His first major television role came in 2013 when he played Bhutana in the second season of the SABC1 drama series Intersexions. He went on to appear in a range of television productions, including: Matatiele (e.tv, 2015) as Bhonyongo Sangqu (a starring role as Nontle’s older brother) Generations Moferefere Lenyalong Single Guyz as Edwin The Queen as Muzi Swartwater as a security guard Gold Diggers as Humphrey Heist, Imposter, iNkaba, Ring of Lies, Isithembiso, 90 Plein Street, and others In film he appeared as Babalo in the critically acclaimed and controversial Inxeba (The Wound) (2017), directed by John Trengove. He was also a musician and had directing ambitions. In the weeks before his death he had secured a new acting job and was excited about upcoming opportunities.
PERSONAL LIFE
Mseleni was known as a family-oriented, hardworking, and resilient person who loved his mother and younger brother deeply. Friends and relatives described him as confident, humorous, energetic, fearless, and a provider who pushed himself despite periods of career struggle. In the months before his death he faced difficulties finding consistent work and spent about a month at home in Fort Beaufort to clear his head, but he remained determined and returned to Johannesburg, where he soon secured a new gig. He was involved in community efforts and had plans for a foundation focused on workshops for aspiring young actors; after his death, family and friends continued aspects of that legacy (including fundraising through memorial T-shirts).
Thobani Mseleni died on 28 April 2018 in a head-on collision on the N6 outside Queenstown (Komani) in the Eastern Cape. The crash also claimed the lives of actor and presenter Akhumzi Jezile, singer and actress Siyasanga Kobese, and two other passengers. He was 30 years old. A memorial service was held at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, and he was buried in Fort Beaufort. The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) and the broader South African entertainment industry paid tribute to him as a talented contributor. Family, friends, and colleagues remembered him for his determination, humour, love of family, and commitment to uplifting others through the arts.
