Bongile Mantsai

EARLY LIFE

Bongile Mantsai was born on 3 February 1982 in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa. He was raised in the Kayamandi township near Stellenbosch, completing high school at Kayamandi High School in 1998. He initially faced challenges pursuing higher education at Stellenbosch University due to language barriers but joined a physical theatre programme with language and movement classes, allowing participation in university productions and building his foundation in the arts.

CAREER

Mantsai built a strong foundation in theatre for over 15 years before fully embracing film and television, citing a desire to master the craft of stage performance and a reluctance to lose privacy. Theatre He worked with the Third World Bunfight performance company (from around 2005), travelling internationally and contributing as a performer and writer/composer (including House of the Holy Afro). He later joined the Baxter Theatre Centre and served as artistic director of the Zabalaza Festival (formerly Ikhwezi Festival), where he facilitated workshops, developed raw talent from disadvantaged communities, and organised mini-festivals. Notable stage credits include: Elke Duim ’n Koning (FNB Vita Award for Best Supporting Actor, 2000–2001) Big Dada (2005) Amaza (2009) Woyzeck (2010) Mies Julie (as John, 2012–2013) — Naledi Theatre Award for Best Lead Actor (2014) Balbesit (2014) Ityala la Mawele (also musical director, 2015) Marat/Sade (2017) Musical direction for Karoo Moose (2008) and other productions Film Inxeba (The Wound) (2017) as Vija — breakthrough role in the acclaimed and controversial film about Xhosa initiation and a same-sex relationship. Won SAFTA for Best Supporting Actor in a Feature Film (2018). The film faced significant protests and classification battles in South Africa. Knuckle City (2019) as Dudu “Nightrider” Nyakama — lead role as an aging boxer from Mdantsane seeking redemption. Won Best Actor at the 2019 Durban International Film Festival and SAFTA for Best Actor in a Feature Film (2020). Also nominated for Best Actor at the African Movie Academy Awards. Other film credits include Sew the Winter to My Skin, Cold Harbour, and iNumber Number: Jozi Gold (2024, nominated for SAFTA Best Supporting Actor). Television Nkululeko (Mzansi Magic) as Poncho — first starring television role. Scandal! (e.tv, from June 2018) as the villainous Mthunzi Mayisa — major breakthrough that raised his public profile; won SAFTA for Best Actor in a TV Soap (2020). Gqeberha: The Empire as Hlumelo Blood Psalms as Hlengu The Republic as MK Grootboom & Sons as Mbulelo Identity as Melusi Red Ink as KK His transition to screen roles was gradual; he has noted that theatre prepared him thoroughly and that the controversy surrounding Inxeba opened his eyes to broader issues of storytelling and representation in South Africa.

PERSONAL LIFE

Mantsai keeps his romantic life and family details private. He has spoken about the contrast between his upbringing as a bishop’s son and youth pastor and the villainous or complex characters he often plays on screen. Community development and sharing the arts with disadvantaged communities have remained important to him throughout his career. He has lived and worked between Cape Town and Johannesburg depending on projects.

Mantsai is recognised for his intense physical performance style, versatility across stage and screen, and commitment to community theatre development. He has won multiple major awards, including three SAFTAs (Best Supporting Actor – Feature for Inxeba, Best Actor – Feature for Knuckle City, and Best Actor – TV Soap for Scandal!), a Naledi Theatre Award, a Durban International Film Festival Best Actor award, and an earlier FNB Vita Award.
