Storyline
Afooma bears the scars of his stepfather's cruelty—burns from an iron for broken bottles—while Lopeda carries the quiet grief of a father she barely remembers. Their paths cross when Clara gives Afooma a ride to school after he misses the bus, and baseball becomes their shared language. Clara, trusting her daughter's judgment, allows Lopeda to visit Afooma's home after school, even as Ehis glowers at them from the doorway. But one afternoon Lopeda vanishes. Clara's frantic search leads her to point fingers at Ehis, who is arrested despite the police finding no evidence that he harmed the girl. The investigation unravels the neighborhood—Clara questions Grace, the nanny; Grace, in turn, watches the families splinter with suspicion. Then Afooma's mother, cleaning his room, pries up a floorboard and finds Lopeda's body, still as stone. Horror and recognition collide in her chest as she confronts Afooma. He confesses in a trembling voice: during a game of baseball, a wild swing sent the ball straight into Lopeda's skull. She crumpled. She stopped breathing. He hid her beneath the floor, telling himself she would wake, that he could not bear another punishment from Ehis. His mother, instead of recoiling, pulls him close. She whispers that she failed him, that she will never let Ehis touch him again. Then she picks up the phone and calls the police, confessing to the discovery and to what she knows. Handcuffed and led to the squad car, she ensures Afooma is placed in the care of Aunty Maggie, a neighbor who never turned a blind eye. Afooma sprints to the car, tears streaking his face, and wraps his arms around her through the open window. She presses his hand to her cheek and tells him to be brave. The car pulls away, leaving Afooma on the curb with Lopeda's ghost and his mother's promise hanging in the air.
