Uzor returns to Lagos with his British wife Annabelle and the cultural friction begins the moment his mother steps through the door. The mother insists on proper greetings hand washed clothes and swallow soups. Annabelle reaches for a washing machine and lighter meals. The mother washes laundry in the yard to shame Annabelle. Uzor defends his wife while pressing her to adapt and a rift opens between them. The mother brings Amara into the house as domestic help but her true intention is to position the younger woman as a replacement wife. Amara masters every traditional dish and greeting earning the mother's praise. Annabelle feels increasingly inadequate. Uzor tells his mother Amara should leave since Annabelle is learning but before Amara can go Annabelle falls violently ill after eating pepper soup Amara prepared. Hospital tests reveal toxic exposure not food poisoning. Uzor confronts Amara and she confesses she poisoned Annabelle to eliminate her rival after overhearing Uzor say she should be sent away. The mother calls a priest and Amara is handed over to estate security. With Amara gone Annabelle recovers and the household settles into a new rhythm. Annabelle begins learning Igbo cooking and language with Uzor guiding her. The mother grudgingly acknowledges the effort. Annabelle eventually reveals she is pregnant delivering the news to Uzor and his mother in a joyful scene. Uzor is ecstatic about becoming a father and his mother celebrates becoming a grandmother. She pushes for twins but Uzor insists on taking it one child at a time. The family gathers around Annabelle as she carries the coming baby and the mother's earlier declaration that no one can make away with a lion's cub shifts from a threat against Annabelle to a protective stance for her grandchild.
