EARLY LIFE
Ernest Obi was born on June 21, 1970, in Anambra State, Nigeria. He is the son of Chief Dara Onyia Egwu, who held the traditional title of Oba 1 of Ukpor. Obi grew up as the only son among his sisters in a royal family setting. He attended Onward Nursery and Primary School and Baptist Academy Secondary School in Lagos. He pursued higher education at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), where he studied Dramatic Arts, majoring in directing.
CAREER
Ernest Obi's passion for acting developed early in life. He began his acting career on stage during secondary school and later appeared on the television program Fortune. He entered Nollywood in the mid-1990s, with notable early roles in 'Glamour Girls' (1994) and 'Rattlesnake' (1995), where he portrayed Sango. Obi transitioned into directing in Nollywood starting in 2003, accumulating 62 directorial credits, including 'Poka Messiah' (2016), 'Idemili' (2014), 'Bleeding Butterfly' (2023), and 'Osariemen' (2023). He also has 4 producer credits and 7 writer credits, contributing to films such as 'The Seed' (2005) and 'Usifo' (2023). From 2007 to 2010, Obi served as the Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Actors Guild of Nigeria.
PERSONAL LIFE
Ernest Obi separated from his first wife in 2007, with whom he had two children. He remarried in a traditional ceremony on May 30, 2010, to Evi (also known as Eki Oki Efajemue). In 2009, he faced public controversy when his ex-wife made accusations against him, which she later privately retracted. Obi chose to handle the situation privately to avoid further publicity.
