Phil's Love Story

Philip, a Lagos businessman, works with his mother Esther. He has been secretly dating Cece, his marketing executive, and wants to formalize the relationship. Cece holds back because Philip obeys Esther's every command. When Philip arranges for Cece to meet Esther, Esther treats Cece with contempt, calling her a mannerless girl who distracts Philip from work. Esther makes it clear she has already chosen Yemisi, a well-to-do family friend returning from the United Kingdom, as the wife she wants for him. Whenever Cece tries to assert herself, Philip cancels plans, and the two abandon a birthday trip to Cape Town when Esther invents a grandfather's remembrance ceremony. Esther has already warned Cece behind his back that she will make Cece's life unbearable, and Cece concludes her future with Philip would be a toxic battle. She leaves him, quits her job, and sends a letter instead of explaining in person. Philip is crushed by the departure and pleads through Cece's friend Joy, who gets nowhere. Esther exploits his grief and pushes him into a public engagement with Yemisi. By that time, Cece has found work as Yemisi's personal assistant. At the engagement party, Cece arrives to deliver a birthday cake and watches Philip propose to Yemisi. When Philip sees her, he calls out her name, and the celebration stops. Yemisi confronts Philip, and the engagement falls apart. He admits the proposal was his mother's idea, not his choice. He challenges Esther directly as well, telling her he knows she threatened Cece. Yemisi returns her ring and tells Philip to go after Cece. Philip finds Cece and says his mother is no longer part of the equation. Cece keeps her guard at first but accepts his sincerity. Esther softens, calls Cece repeatedly to apologize, and begs not to be shut out. A family dinner follows, where Cece forgives Esther.
