Justice For Abby

In Justice for Abby, Barrister Fubara Peterside walks out of court celebrating another victory and telling reporters he never loses a case. Across town Lucy visits her pregnant sister Compassion and learns their elder sister Abigail has lost yet another baby to her husband Osahon's abuse. Abigail has written in her journal that Osahon kicked three pregnancies out of her and that she fears for her life. Lucy moves in with the couple to protect Abigail but Osahon violently rejects her presence and forces her to leave. Days later a call tells Lucy that Abigail is dead. Osahon claims self defence saying Abigail attacked him with a knife during a bipolar episode triggered by pregnancy loss and that she hit her head and died in the struggle. He took her body to the mortuary and filed a police report before informing Lucy. The police rule it self defence and close the case. Grief stricken and suspicious Lucy confronts Osahon but he dismisses her. She seeks legal help and eventually forces her way into Fubara's office begging him to take her case. Fubara initially refuses citing his busy schedule and a ten million naira retainer fee but Lucy's desperation and the fire in her eyes persuade him. He agrees to petition the coroner's court for an inquest and a government conducted autopsy and gives Lucy two weeks to raise the fee. Desperate for money Lucy is tempted by a friend to do escort work and eventually spends a night with a client earning five hundred thousand naira. Meanwhile Fubara discovers the first autopsy was suspicious and pushes for a second independent one. Lucy finds a witness Ify who is Abigail's neighbor and saw Osahon assaulting Abigail but Ify refuses to testify out of fear. Osahon learns of the reopened investigation and burns Abigail's diary and attempts to bribe the pathologist. The second autopsy validates Osahon's story showing no signs of struggle poisoning or injury and crushes Lucy's hopes.
