Devil You Know

In Devil You Know, Pius, a volatile man, returns home to his wife Lisa and starts an argument over chores and her lateness. The fight turns physical, and Pius grabs and chokes Lisa. New neighbor Duke hears the distress from the adjacent apartment and calls his sister, who warns him to stay out of it. Duke introduces himself to Pius, but his concern deepens as the abuse continues. Unable to ignore the violence, Duke makes a duplicate key to Lisa's apartment and slips in to check on her. Though frightened, Lisa gradually opens up about her life with Pius. They married while he was in the army, and his later dismissal and years of violence left her scarred and believing she is infertile and deserving of punishment. Their connection grows into an affair. When Pius returns unexpectedly, he interrogates Lisa, locks her in the bathroom, and threatens Duke. Duke breaks in, fights Pius, knocks him unconscious, and he and Lisa tie the man to a chair while they decide what to do. While Pius is captive, Lisa confronts him with a medical document proving he is the one with a fertility problem, not her. She unleashes years of anger at his mistreatment. Pius breaks free and lunges at her, but Duke pulls him off and savagely beats him. Grabbing Lisa, Duke flees with her, and Pius gives chase in his car. A frantic highway pursuit follows, and Pius's vehicle crashes. He is badly injured and unconscious and is rushed to the hospital. The doctor reports that Pius is stable but has retrograde amnesia from the crash, and he remembers neither Lisa nor anyone else. Lisa and Duke introduce themselves only as neighbors. As they prepare to leave, Lisa gives the doctor the contact number of Pius's mistress and says it is now her turn to deal with his behavior. The two drive away together, free to start a new life.
