Storyline

In Colors, Elizabeth fries akara in a densely packed Lagos slum while her husband Praise, a plumber, pressures her to cook for visitors ahead of his planned marriage to a second wife. He wants a male heir for his family name. Elizabeth discovers her hidden savings gone, stolen by Praise, and he dismisses her distress while insisting the wedding proceed. Their daughter Blessing cares for her infant son Bomboy and fields calls from her mother about the worsening crisis. Elizabeth finds a lost wallet belonging to Madam Gold, the wife of a wealthy microfinance director, and returns it. Impressed by her honesty, Madam Gold hires Elizabeth as a live-in cleaner at their luxurious modern home. There she bonds with Madam Gold over their shared Imo State heritage, and the exposure to a different lifestyle sparks a quiet shift. Back in the slum, Praise moves the new wife into the bedroom and relegates Elizabeth to the parlour, demanding she cook for the wedding guests despite having taken her money. Elizabeth refuses and confronts him about the theft, asserting her autonomy. As the wedding approaches, she begins expressing herself through striking, multi-colored outfits and headwraps. Praise mocks her appearance and threatens to send her packing. Elizabeth laughs off his threats and declares she is creating her own happiness and fashion. On the wedding day, she arrives at the venue in a dazzling, layered ensemble, unbothered by gossip. Her bold self-presentation becomes a public declaration of independence that shocks onlookers and silences her husband's ridicule. In the aftermath, Elizabeth settles into her new rhythm at Madam Gold's house, finding joy in styling herself and operating the modern appliances. She confides in Madam Gold about her husband's betrayal but emphasizes she no longer lets it define her, focusing instead on her children, grandchildren, and the simple pleasure of mixing colors.
