The Mercy Of The Jungle
Structuring itself as a tense, psychological survival road-movie, The Mercy of the Jungle chooses to explore the horrors of the Congo wars through an intimate micro-lens. As they navigate the wilderness, they encounter various localized elements of the conflict: ruthless Congolese militiamen, corrupt mercenary mining operations, and suspicious villagers who harbor a deep antipathy toward the Rwandan military. Xavier suffers from severe PTSD, haunted by the atrocities he has committed and witnessed, while Faustin's romanticized views of military glory quickly evaporate.

Storyline
Set in 1998 at the violent outbreak of the Second Congo War, the film follows two Rwandan soldiers stationed in the vast, dense wilderness of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Sergeant Xavier is a hardened, war-weary veteran, while Private Faustin is a naive young recruit seeking vengeance for his family killed in the Rwandan Genocide. When their battalion abruptly scrambles in the middle of the night to pursue a rebel faction, the two men are accidentally left behind. Lost without food, water, or medicine, they must set aside their psychological scars and learn to rely on each other to survive a treacherous journey westward through enemy territory.
