Nirere Shanel

EARLY LIFE

Ruth Nirere, professionally known as Nirere Shanel, began singing as a child in Rwanda. While still a secondary-school student she released songs intended to comfort survivors and commemorate victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. These tracks became regularly associated with Rwanda’s annual genocide commemoration period. In 2004 she won the “Never Again” competition selecting the best commemorative artist.

CAREER

Music Shanel achieved early success at age 13 with the zouk-influenced single “Ndarota!” from her 1998 debut album of the same name. In 2004 she released two widely successful a cappella singles that elevated her to national prominence. Her early style mixed R&B, soul, zouk, and acoustic elements. In 2009 she released the album Narrow Road, which leaned more toward traditional Rwandan musical styles and featured collaborations with artists from Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda. She has been nominated three times for the Pearl of Africa Music Award (2006, 2007, 2008) and won the Salax Award for Best Female Artist in 2009. In 2012 she performed for Rwandan peacekeepers in Darfur. In 2013 she moved to France to pursue formal vocal training. Acting Alongside music she developed a successful acting career. She starred in Le jour où Dieu est parti en voyage (The Day God Walked Away, 2009), a film addressing stories of the Rwandan genocide; her performance earned Best Actress awards at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival (Greece) and the International Film Festival Bratislava (Slovakia). Other film credits include Long Coat (2010, directed by Edouard Bamporiki), Grey Matter / Matière grise (2011, directed by Kivu Ruhorahoza), Avenir, and The Mercy of the Jungle (2018, directed by Joël Karekezi), in which she appeared as Amina and also contributed as a singer and songwriter.

PERSONAL LIFE

She is married and has two daughters. In public comments she has spoken about balancing family life with her artistic work after relocating to France. She has also discussed the challenges of pursuing music as a young woman in a context where it was not always viewed as a serious profession.

Nirere Shanel is recognized as one of Rwanda’s prominent female artists who has worked across music and cinema, often engaging themes of memory, healing, and post-genocide experience. She has continued to create music focused on social messages and has collaborated with organizations supporting vulnerable communities. After studying and living in France she has maintained connections with both the Rwandan and international cultural scenes.
