Marc Zinga

EARLY LIFE

Marc Zinga was born on 21 October 1984 in Likasi, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (then Zaire). At the age of five he moved with his family to Belgium, where he grew up primarily in the Brussels area. He developed an early interest in performance and music. Between 2003 and 2011 he was one of the lead singers of the Brussels funk group The Peas Project. He later trained as an actor at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles.

CAREER

Zinga began acting in the late 2000s with small film and television roles. Early credits include Mr. Nobody (2009, directed by Jaco Van Dormael), Diamant 13 (alongside Gérard Depardieu), and the television film Mister Bob (in which he portrayed General Mobutu). He also appeared in the French series Engrenages (Spiral) and directed the short film Grand Garçon (2013). His breakthrough came in 2014 with two major roles: Yaya Koné in Les Rayures du zèbre (Scouting for Zebras), for which he won the Magritte Award for Most Promising Actor, and the lead in Abd Al Malik’s Qu’Allah bénisse la France (May Allah Bless France!), which earned him a César Award nomination for Most Promising Actor as well as a Lumière Award nomination. He went on to work with leading European directors. In 2015 he appeared in Jacques Audiard’s Palme d’Or winner Dheepan and in the James Bond film Spectre (as Moreau). He collaborated repeatedly with the Dardenne brothers in The Unknown Girl (2016), Young Ahmed (2019), and Tori and Lokita (2022). Other notable performances include the title role of Seyolo Zantoko in The African Doctor (Bienvenue à Marly-Gomont, 2016), Sergeant Xavier in the Rwandan film The Mercy of the Jungle (2018) — for which he won Best Actor at FESPACO — and the lead role of Koffi in Baloji’s Omen (Augure, 2023), which brought further Magritte nominations. Zinga has also maintained a presence in theatre, notably performing as Edmond in King Lear and as Patrice Lumumba in Aimé Césaire’s Une Saison au Congo under director Christian Schiaretti at the Théâtre National Populaire. He continues to work across French, Belgian, and international cinema and television.

Marc Zinga is recognized as one of the prominent Congolese-Belgian actors of his generation, known for nuanced performances that often explore identity, migration, conflict, and postcolonial themes. His career bridges mainstream international productions (including a James Bond film) and critically acclaimed European and African cinema. He has received multiple Magritte Award nominations and wins, a César nomination, and the Best Actor prize at FESPACO.
