Michael Wawuyo Jr.

EARLY LIFE

Michael Wawuyo Jr. was born on 17 December 1986 in Kampala, Uganda. He is the son of veteran Ugandan actor and special effects director Michael Wawuyo. His mother, Anne Mugoya Wawuyo, lives with sickle cell disease, a cause for which he has become an advocate. He attended Lohana Academy, where he played the role of Jesus in a school production, and Makerere College School (with some accounts also noting Jinja College), where he portrayed Njoroge in Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o and Ngũgĩ wa Mirii’s play I Will Marry When I Want. He later studied Information Science at Uganda Christian University. Growing up around film sets with his father sparked his interest in acting from an early age; he has appeared alongside his father in projects including The Right to Life, Stone Cold, and The Bullion.

CAREER

Wawuyo Jr. entered the industry around 2007. His breakout role came as Brother John in the popular NTV Uganda television series The Hostel (season 1). He went on to appear in Beneath The Lies – The Series (as Shaban) and Yat Madit (as Opio), among other local productions. He has become one of the central figures in contemporary Ugandan cinema, particularly through collaborations with director Loukman Ali. Notable film roles include Jim Akena in The Girl in the Yellow Jumper (2020/2021), the first Ugandan feature released on Netflix; Captain Ddamba / related characters in the shorts The Blind Date and Sixteen Rounds (2021); and appearances in 27 Guns, Kyenvu, Bed of Thorns, Nsiwe, Kafa Coh, Ubuntu Uppercut, and the Netflix/UNESCO anthology African Folktales, Reimagined (as Omar in the episode directed by Loukman Ali). He has also worked as a producer, including on the film Boy No Fear. In interviews he has discussed the growth of Ugandan cinema, the challenges of funding and distribution, the value of self-taught skills (he has emphasized learning via online resources and on-set experience), and the importance of telling local stories that can reach international platforms such as Netflix and Showmax.

Michael Wawuyo Jr. is regarded as a leading actor of his generation in Ugandan film and television. He continues to act, produce, and collaborate on projects that elevate local storytelling while advocating for greater professionalization and international visibility of Ugandan cinema.
