The Beauty Of Broken Things

David Ayodele meets Didi at his friend Sophie's birthday party in Lagos, where the talented artist lives with sickle cell disorder and keeps mostly to himself while she works as a product designer with a sharp wit. Their connection is immediate despite his reclusive nature, and over subsequent dates they bond over art and Scrabble and shared vulnerability as David reveals his condition and the pain it brings along with the engagement that ended because his ex-fiancée's parents disapproved of his health. Didi accepts him wholly. Then a severe sickle cell crisis sends David to the hospital, and terrified of subjecting Didi to a lifetime of caregiving and potential loss, he pushes her away and insists she deserves a future without his illness. Didi is devastated but refuses to abandon him. Didi's mother, a nurse haunted by the childhood death of a cousin from sickle cell, vehemently opposes the relationship. David's mother urges him not to let fear dictate his choices. His friend Tega challenges his self-sabotage and reminds him that Didi has stood by him through every struggle. David completes his masterpiece, a painting titled The Beauty of Broken Things, which embodies his path of finding wholeness in brokenness. He proposes to Didi and she accepts. At his private exhibition screening David delivers a raw speech about living as a sickle cell warrior and the universal nature of human fragility. Didi arrives late. In a charged moment before the crowd David apologizes for pushing her away and quotes his own art, saying he wants to share his brokenness with her beauty and asks for a chance. She stays. The exhibition celebrates David's art and the hard-won understanding that love does not require perfection, only the courage to remain on the ship together through crisis and recovery, broken yet whole. The film closes with David and Didi reconciled, their foreheads touching in a quiet promise.
