Sankofa acts as a profound psychological and visual exploration of historical trauma and spiritual awakening. Her journey introduces her to a complex web of enslaved people: Shango, a fiercely rebellious field worker who constantly plots resistance; Nunu, an elder woman who remembers her life of freedom in Africa before being stolen; and Joe, Nunu’s mixed-race son who serves as a loyal plantation driver and experiences a severe identity crisis due to the brainwashing of the plantation priest.

Storyline

Sanfoka follows Mona, a self-absorbed African American fashion model on a glamorous photo shoot at the historic Cape Coast Castle in Ghana—a former slave port. While posing on the beach, she encounters a mysterious local elder and divine drummer named Sankofa, who aggressively implores her to connect with her ancestors. Ignoring him, Mona enters the castle's dark dungeons, where she undergoes a mystical and harrowing time-travel experience. She is violently stripped of her modern identity and transported back to a brutal chattel slave plantation in North America, where she lives as Shola, an enslaved house worker forced to witness and endure the horrors of plantation life firsthand.
