Storyline
The movie Maryam shows a family falling apart even while trying to stay together. Years pass as Nafisat stays sick. Ibrahim watches his wife give all her time to their daughter. He feels like a ghost in his own house. He says Maryam even forgets about their other daughter Nadia. One day, Ibrahim tells his friend he wants a second wife. He feels no love from Maryam anymore. When Ibrahim tells Maryam his plan, she does not get angry first. She gets sad. Very sad. She tells her friend Hajia Zainab that she wants a divorce. But Zainab says no. She reminds Maryam that Islam lets a man marry more than one wife. She tells Maryam to be patient and not divorce him. Maryam is trapped by her own faith. Then Ibrahim goes to a Sheikh. He lies. He says Maryam accepted his choice and is being a good Muslim wife. The Sheikh believes him. The Sheikh even brings other clerics to Ibrahim's house to praise Maryam for being so understanding. They have no idea she is crying inside. The big fight comes later. Ibrahim attacks Maryam with words. He says she failed as a wife and a mother. Then Maryam drops the bomb. She tells him she is pregnant. You think this will change his mind, right? It does not. Ibrahim still says he will marry the second woman. The movie ends with Maryam standing there, pregnant, betrayed, and completely broken. No happy ending. Just a family waiting to fall apart.
