Mami Wata
Mami Wata is a haunting folkloric tale deeply rooted in West African mythology, where ancient beliefs, mystery, and the supernatural shape the lives of a coastal community. Rather than following the structure of a conventional Nollywood drama, the film unfolds as a stylized, slow-burning fantasy thriller, drawing audiences into a world where tradition, fear, faith, and the unknown collide. Its atmospheric storytelling and striking visual style give the story a dreamlike quality while exploring the power of belief, community, and the forces that lie beyond human understanding.

Storyline
In the remote, oceanside West African village of Iyi, the villagers worship the powerful water deity, Mami Wata. Mama Efe acts as the revered, intermediate medium between the goddess and her people. However, when a young boy dies from a viral outbreak, the villagers begin to lose faith and challenge Mama Efe's spiritual authority. Mama Efe's daughter, Zinwe, and her skeptical protégé, Prisca, warn her of the growing unrest. The tension boils over with the sudden arrival of Jasper, a mysterious rebel deserter. Jasper exploits the villagers' anger, promising modern technological progress and weaponized power. This ignites a violent, ideological clash that threatens to destroy the village’s matriarchal spiritual order, forcing the two sisters to fight to save their people and restore the glory of the mermaid goddess.
