Nkechi sits at her mother's house eating a meal when her mother berates her for visiting instead of caring for her husband Sylvanus, insults him as wretched, and grabs the food to demand her return to the marital home. Meanwhile Sylvanus struggles to start his keke tricycle, pouring fuel and praying for the engine to turn over, and when Nkechi finds him she helps repair it in a tender moment that reaffirms their bond. Landlady Mama Biko evicts them for unpaid rent, forcing the couple into Nkechi's mother's house where hostility toward Sylvanus intensifies with constant mockery of his inability to provide. Armed robbers steal Sylvanus's keke and beat him severely, deepening their desperation, so Nkechi's mother invites Emy, a wealthy American returnee who lavishes money and pursues Nkechi with promises of America. Nkechi refuses Emy and declares loyalty to Sylvanus but her mother pressures her to accept, and humiliated by the insults Sylvanus packs his bags to leave. Nkechi pleads for him to stay and reveals secret savings from her mother's shop, yet Sylvanus feels betrayed and departs for Mike's workshop where he gets a job and a place to sleep. At Mike's workshop Sylvanus receives counsel about marriage and resilience as Mike shares his tragic loss of wife and child and urges Sylvanus not to abandon Nkechi. Back at the house Emy confronts Nkechi at her mother's cafe sparking a chaotic brawl that draws in Sylvanus and Emy's entourage. Nkechi's mother attacks Nkechi and reveals her history of abandoning poor husbands, but Nkechi retaliates by exposing how she drove her first husband to depression and death and forced out her second. The confrontation leaves the mother shaken and Nkechi vows never to forgive her if Sylvanus does not return, while Sylvanus encouraged by Mike decides to fight for his marriage and returns to the village.
