Ghetto Girl

In Ghetto Girl, Destiny steals without knowing it, and her elder sister Agnes Oni, a seamstress, has run out of options after churches and healers. Neighbor Nkiru accuses Destiny of taking a wig and 3,500 naira. A self-proclaimed evangelist says a serpent spirit lives in Destiny, but she beats him and denies the theft. Agnes then emails Somto Chuku, host of the Fixer Show. Somto travels to the slum, is beaten by men who mistake him for a police officer, and is warned off by his friend Shola, yet he agrees to treat Destiny on air. Somto makes Destiny sign a contract and move into his guarded home, and Shola calls the setup exploitation. During his first recording Somto calls her a kleptomaniac and a thief, and she storms out. He posts the episode anyway, it trends, and Somto apologizes with gifts, but Shola says he is using her story for money. Destiny then tearfully explains that she first stole for her sick father's medicine and could not stop after his death. Donations pass thirty thousand dollars. The two grow close until Somto finds a missing limited-edition wristwatch in her possession after a shopping trip and throws her out. Destiny returns to Agnes and refuses to speak to Somto. Somto sinks into depression until Shola tells him that Shola has been helping Destiny see a therapist and that she gave the stolen money to orphanages because she did not want other children to suffer. Somto goes to Agnes's shop, admits he profited from Destiny's story, offers the money to her, and says he loves her. Agnes sends him away, but he keeps coming back, and he finally apologizes, promises to stay through her treatment, and proposes. Destiny hesitates because she considers herself an uneducated ghetto girl, but accepts when Somto jokes he wants to become a ghetto boy too, and the two embrace.
