Eni Akoko (The Savage Daughter)

Temilade is the character who tells the story. Her father Makinde hates girl children and thinks they are only for marriage. He is disappointed when his wife Abeni has many girls and threatens to leave her. Then they have a son Ayomide. Makinde celebrates with a big party and favors the boy. He sends Ayomide to school but denies education to the daughters and forces them into early marriages for money. He marries the oldest daughter Omolara to Badejo who abuses her. When she runs home, Makinde sends her back. Temilade wants education. She secretly listens to Teacher Bioye's class and answers a question right. The teacher sponsors her school secretly. She hides her uniform and attends. She also helps her brother with homework but the father stops her. Then Makinde arranges marriage for Funmilola to bad man Ladi. Funmilola runs away to Lagos. Ladi wants money back. The father has spent it, so he tries to marry Temilade to Ladi. Temilade runs away with the teacher to Lagos. He sponsors her to become a lawyer. Later, Ayomide fights and kills a student. Police arrest him and say he was expelled from school years ago. In court, the prosecutor is Temilade. Her parents are shocked. The father begs forgiveness and admits girls are not useless. Temilade forgives but cannot free her brother. She promises to help with his sentence and take care of the family.
