Kelvin arrives at Melissa's apartment in the dead of night, seeking refuge from his girlfriend's demands, and despite Melissa's annoyance, he collapses onto her bed. The next day, she intrudes on his space when he has another woman coming over, revealing the comfortably blurred boundaries of their friendship. At the gym, Melissa boldly asks Jakes, a wealthy businessman, on a date—and he accepts. She shares her excitement with her friend Tessy, unaware that Kelvin has already begun digging into Jakes's past. Their first date goes well, but Kelvin's background check leads to a heated argument with Melissa, who resents his interference. When Jakes ignores her for phone calls during a visit, Kelvin follows her home, provoking a confrontation about his overprotectiveness. An embarrassing moment—Melissa accidentally passes gas in front of Jakes—sends her running to Kelvin for comfort, and he advises open communication. Yet Melissa feels increasingly neglected, longing for fun and connection, while Kelvin's own feelings simmer beneath the surface. Jakes proposes, and Melissa accepts the ring with unease. Tessy warns her against the decision, and Kelvin confesses his love, insisting the marriage would ruin three lives. Melissa finally recognizes her true emotions and returns the ring. To her shock, Jakes admits he proposed intentionally to force Melissa and Kelvin to confront their bond; he loves her but releases her, knowing her happiness lies elsewhere.
