White Wings

Ene is a delivery driver with an abusive partner named Chibuzor, who belittles her and blames her for his own misfortunes. In White Wings, Tonye, a wealthy, arrogant young man, mocks her car, her appearance, and her hair during a roadside confrontation. Days later, an agency sends Ene to a housekeeping job at Mrs. Onyebra’s estate, and Tonye turns out to be her son. He recognises Ene as the woman who damaged his car and tells her to leave, but Mrs. Onyebra overrules him and hires Ene. Tonye keeps humiliating her in her first days. Chibuzor forces Ene to stay at the job so he can keep depending on her. Tonye is leading a double life. He uses drugs, and he has trusted Daniel, a friend who embezzled ten million naira from the family firm. When Mrs. Onyebra sees Tonye’s drugs and learns the money is missing, a hypertensive collapse kills her. Tonye is shattered. Ene cooks for him and pleads with him to forgive himself. He sees the bruises Chibuzor left on her and offers her a place to stay. Daniel returns to repent and restore part of the stolen money, and Tonye forgives him. Now that he has forgiven Daniel, Tonye gives Ene a necklace and confesses his love. She pushes him away, then tells him she is dying of cancer. Tonye refuses to live in sadness and fear. He takes her on joyful outings and boat trips, and they marry outside among family and friends, with Daniel offering a toast. Their brief, lovely marriage ends when Ene’s illness takes her. Months later, Tonye is alone in a dim living room, tending to memorial portraits of his late mother and his beloved first wife, Ene. After blowing out the candles, he picks up his suitcase and leaves.
