What Nkechi Wants

Nkechi Regina Obinna has struggled for years. Her friend Ada gets her a job at a Lagos hotel and lets Nkechi live with her. Ada warns her to be wise in the city. Nkechi finds a wallet that belongs to Gideon. She returns it untouched, and Gideon tests her by asking if she stole the dollars inside. Nothing is missing. She asks for work instead of a reward. Gideon and his girlfriend Haviva take her in as their live-in cook and cleaner. In What Nkechi Wants, Nkechi cooks well and keeps the house spotless, but she wants Haviva's place in Gideon's life. She hides Haviva's silicone padding and watches the couple argue over it. Nkechi advises Haviva to leave so Gideon will miss her and pay for her body enhancement. Haviva moves out with her friend Bisola, and Nkechi becomes more visible to Gideon. She serves his meals and listens to him. Gideon starts to see her as sincere, and his friend Leo notices the house looks better. Gideon tells Nkechi he wants more than friendship. Nkechi is overjoyed, and soon she says she is pregnant. Gideon is encouraged, and he puts a ring on her finger. The celebration ends when Haviva and Bisola burst in and expose the scheme. They tell Gideon that Nkechi used the same trick before. She came in as a humble maid, faked a pregnancy, and took another woman's man. They reveal that Nkechi is already married. Gideon is devastated and demands an explanation. Nkechi pleads that she was married off at fourteen, lost her mother, and feared losing the first man who truly loved her. Gideon does not forgive the deception and orders her to leave. Nkechi places the engagement ring on the table and walks out. Haviva, who used to demand money and surgery, thanks Nkechi for teaching her to appreciate the man she already had. Haviva asks for a second chance, and Gideon takes her back. He tells Leo it is better to stay with the devil you know than chase an angel you do not know. Gideon and Haviva reconcile.
