The Collateral Girl

In The Collateral Girl Ifeoma arrives at Chief's luxurious home as collateral for the twelve point eight million naira her parents Ferdinand and her mother owe, a debt that ballooned from a three point five million loan for her childhood surgery. Chief's assistant Benita presents the arrangement and Chief agrees despite Ferdinand's protests, and Ifeoma begins her indentured servitude sleeping on the sitting room floor unaware of her duties. She serves black coffee without cream or sugar and prepares heavy swallow for a light breakfast and even confuses coffee for coffin in a comedic introduction to her new life. Chief's frustration builds until he unexpectedly begins mentoring her in the kitchen and softens toward her. Meanwhile Kennedy returns from abroad having been deported over a drug case and immediately harasses Ifeoma with lewd advances and mockery, but she stands her ground and slaps him across the face. When Chief suffers a minor stroke Ifeoma tends to him devotedly through the night, earning his deep gratitude, and Kennedy witnesses her care and his father's growing affection for her. He confesses to Chief that she makes him want to become a better man, and Chief recognizes their connection and orchestrates her freedom by paying off her parents' debt with four point five million naira. He declares her free and sends her home to her family's humble house where her parents celebrate the windfall and her release with joy. Kennedy follows her to return her forgotten luggage and seizes the moment to declare his love with a promise necklace. Ifeoma initially refuses citing her lack of education and domestic skills. Kennedy apologizes for his past behavior and insists, and she agrees to let him wait while accepting the necklace as a symbol of his commitment. With the debt cleared she announces her intention to return to school funded by Chief's generosity, and her parents rejoice in their freedom from the burden that held them for years.
