Biography
Kunle Anikulapo-Kuti is the eldest son of the legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti and a prominent representative of the iconic Ransome-Kuti family. He is the grandchild of the historic Nigerian feminist, educator, and anti-colonial campaigner Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. He is also the older brother to world-renowned musicians Femi Kuti and Seun Kuti. He made headlines by making his major feature film debut in the acclaimed Bolanle Austen-Peters biographical movie Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. In a poetic casting choice, Kunle portrayed his own father, Fela Kuti, alongside other family members who played their respective parents to ensure historical authenticity. He frequently acts as a spokesperson for the Fela Kuti estate, regularly participating in high-profile media events like the Grammy Awards to accept posthumous honors on behalf of his father. He oversees the day-to-day operations of the Kalakuta Museum in Ikeja, Lagos. The venue preserves Fela's personal artifacts, musical instruments, and unreleased records for future generations. He remains a vocal social critic in Nigeria, openly calling out administrative and educational failures. He notably criticized the Nigerian government for failing to adequately teach history in local school curriculums, which he argues actively undermines the legacy of local heroes.
