Storyline
In Star Crossed, Kate lives with her strict mother, Mrs. Umezinwa, and the maid, Maggie, whom she threatens into silence. Kate sneaks out late, wants to study abroad, but her mother refuses. For five months Kate hides stomach pain and bloody stools, sure it is an ulcer. Her aunt, Dr. Helen, delivers a report: stage two gastric cancer. Because her father died in a hospital, Kate refuses to go. Helen arranges home care with a personal nurse, and Obinna Peters arrives. Obinna enforces meals and medicine, and Kate resents him. He stays patient, takes her vitals, lends her a novella, and the book changes her outlook. Kate tells him she wants love and dating for the first time, so he stages a movie night with a picnic and rose petals. They grow close. Kate sneaks out with a friend, gets Obinna to take her to dinner, and they kiss. Mrs. Umezinwa catches them and warns him. Their closeness continues until Mrs. Umezinwa finds them lying together in Kate's bed, confines him to the ground floor, and fires him. Obinna reveals Kate's medication has stopped working, and Mrs. Umezinwa breaks down and admits she already knows her daughter is dying. Obinna is thrown out, Kate's phone is confiscated, and she mourns him and refuses to eat. Maggie helps Kate reach Obinna, and the two meet secretly at eight outside the house. Helen tells Mrs. Umezinwa about St. Thomas Hospital in the UK, where a treatment has a high success rate, and Mrs. Umezinwa agrees to take Kate. Kate writes Obinna a farewell letter and tells him he is her light and that she loves him. Obinna receives it, learns she is leaving for London, and discovers he has won a UK scholarship and a hospital job. He decides he cannot stay behind, writes his own letter, and gives it to Maggie. As Mrs. Umezinwa drives Kate away, Kate reads it. He promises to bring her to him and declares his love. Kate smiles and holds the letter close.
