Storyline
In the film SISI ILEWE, after his father's funeral is halted, Aremu assumes control of Ayede, demanding debt repayments and ignoring community pleas. When teacher Labisi speaks for the villagers, he imprisons her in a bamboo cage, inciting fear and resentment. Fishermen Alani and Chukwudi discuss raising money for her freedom, while Labisi's parents mourn her fate. Though bullying the police and seizing farms, Aremu shows brief conflict after Labisi challenges his cruelty during a storm, comparing him to his benevolent father. Aremu releases a prisoner, Akanni, who escapes by canoe, and later gives Labisi a book via messenger. Labisi offers another prisoner, Ajala, a teaching job if he reforms. Aremu attempts reconciliation, gifting her books and asking for a stroll, but she rebuffs him, comparing their dynamic to a lion and rabbit. Tensions escalate into a physical fight between Aremu and Alani at the school. Alani proposes to Labisi, but she hesitates; under maternal pressure, she proceeds with wedding plans, only to confess on the wedding day that she no longer loves him, breaking the engagement and driving Alani from the village. Weeks later, while cleaning the school, Labisi is approached by Aremu. They discuss letters she wrote him during his time in the United States. He confesses he never stopped thinking about her, and she reveals she never truly loved Alani. They embrace, resolving their uncertainty and signaling a new beginning for the village.
