Storyline
Emem is married to Chike and carries their first child, yet Chike mocks her changing body and chooses football over her needs. In Places In The Heart she meets Dr Yaro, a widowed obstetrician who still grieves his wife Ijeoma after she died of COVID in the United States. Yaro gives Emem a journal to record her fears, and she begins writing about the growing pull she feels toward him. At the same time Dr Ernest, Yaro's new chief of staff, crosses ethical lines with a pregnant patient. The journal becomes a private space where Emem admits she feels seen for the first time in months. Chike later finds the notebook and reads the raw entries that describe her emotional attachment to Yaro. Emem brings soup to Yaro's home when he falls ill and she asks about the framed photograph of Ijeoma on his wall. Yaro tells her that Ijeoma died alone in an ICU while he was stranded in Nigeria and that the photo was their first anniversary gift. Their conversation turns into a late night phone call where they banter about food and share their vulnerabilities. Chike confronts Emem after reading the journal, throws the notebook across the room and demands an explanation. A friend urges Chike to think of their unborn child before he decides on divorce. Yaro confronts Ernest at the hospital, exposes the affair with a patient and orders him to resign within forty eight hours or face a board report. Chike reads the remaining entries aloud, hears Emem's enduring love and her pain, apologizes, promises to change and suggests couples therapy, which Emem accepts. At Emem's doorway Yaro asks her to leave with him, but she refuses because she is committed to her child and to Chike. She challenges Yaro to face his unresolved grief instead of running from it and extracts a promise that he will finally write in his own journals. The story jumps to Christmas where Emem and Chike decorate a tree together, affectionate and reconciled. Yaro sits alone at his desk with a pen in hand and begins to write.
