In Piece By Piece Joy lives in a comfortable Lagos home with her husband Ikenna and their young daughter Kamsi but the marriage is a prison of mounting physical and emotional abuse. Her sisters — sharp-tongued Ifeoma, fiercely protective boxer Chichi, and pragmatic Ekwutosi — gather at their mother Ebele's house where arguments erupt over Joy's refusal to leave. Ebele, desperate for grandchildren and social respectability, pressures Joy to endure, even fasting and praying for her daughters' marital futures while Joy's body bears the hidden bruises of Ikenna's violence. The abuse intensifies: Ikenna shoves Joy down the stairs during a pregnancy scare, later chokes her when she questions his infidelity, and routinely gaslights her into believing she is the problem. After a brutal assault lands Joy in the hospital with a black eye she lies that she fell but Chichi uncovers the truth and storms Ikenna's office physically attacking him in a public confrontation. Meanwhile Ekwutosi and Ifeoma clash with their mother over her complicity and Joy begins secretly planning a catering business to gain financial independence. The police dismiss the sisters' report as a domestic dispute leaving the women to rely on themselves. Ikenna arrives uninvited at Ebele's house demanding access to Kamsi asserting ownership over Joy and their child. Ebele, finally awakened to the mortal danger, confronts him with boxing gloves and a thunderous ultimatum: sign the divorce papers or leave in a body bag. She declares that the only legal bond between them is the traditional marriage receipt and she will no longer sacrifice her daughter on the altar of tradition. Ikenna retreats humiliated while Joy standing firm beside her mother tells him she and Kamsi belong to no one and that his reign of terror is over. In the aftermath Ebele tearfully apologizes to Joy acknowledging she valued appearances over her daughter's life.
