My Neighbour

Sierra and her mother Ethel move into a new apartment, and Sierra starts at a new school. Their neighbor Damian, a single father to a son named Jamal, welcomes them with a bottle of wine. Ethel immediately warns Sierra to stay away from Damian and Jamal, even after Sierra and Jamal discover they attend the same school. Sierra secretly meets Dave, the man she calls her father, but Ethel catches them, publicly accuses Dave of being a kidnapper, and drags Sierra inside. Damian's drinking problems worsen, and Ethel helps Jamal care for him after he is found unconscious. During the hospital visit, Damian pulls Claire aside and confides that Jamal is actually his nephew, not his son, which points to a hidden family tragedy. Ethel breaks down and admits she deliberately kept the real story from Sierra, and she had used the secret to punish the man who abandoned her years ago. She tells Sierra that Dave is not her father but her uncle, and that Damian is her real father. Mother and daughter sit in silence, and neither speaks for a long time. Mother and daughter reconcile as Ethel apologizes for years of deception. Dave arrives at the hospital and is warmly embraced as Uncle Dave. The neighborhood settles into a quiet peace, and the families begin to heal. Sierra answers her phone and hears her grandfather's voice.
