Karma Says

Honore stays home in Lagos with her young son Jason while her husband Justin, a marine engineer, works offshore for long stretches. In Karma Says, her quiet life shifts when a new neighbor, Anita, moves in next door and the two become fast friends. Anita says she is in Lagos for work and will stay six months. During a phone call with Justin, Honore catches a woman's voice in the background, and suspicion takes root. She confides in Anita at the gym, and Anita tells her to confront him when he returns. When Justin comes home early, he is cold and critical of Honore's new friendship and her more fashionable appearance. He suggests inviting Anita over for dinner with his friend Coye. That night, Justin feels strangely familiar with Anita without knowing why. Meanwhile, a teenage girl named Carol, desperate for a party dress, accepts help from an older man who buys it for her and later summons her to his hotel room. Justin is that man. He plies Carol with wine, takes sexual advantage of her, gives her money, and begins a destructive relationship. Carol becomes pregnant, and Justin arranges a poorly executed abortion that damages her womb and leaves her HIV positive. Her mother turns out to be Anita, who discovers the truth and moves next door to Justin's family to investigate. Anita confronts Honore with evidence from Carol's phone that exposes Justin's predatory behavior. Honore gets tested and learns she is also HIV positive. She confronts Justin, and he admits to having dark urges and begs for help, but Honore decides to leave him. In a rage, Justin breaks into Anita's house, and during the struggle Honore knocks him out with a vase, so the police are called. Justin is arrested and handcuffed as police lead him away, while Honore and Anita stand together outside the gate and embrace.
