Heart Strings

When successful doctor Eno attends a charity event, he is instantly mesmerized by Dr. Agatha Esiri’s fiery speech about her work with displaced persons. In 'Heart Strings', a subsequent date ends abruptly after Agatha accuses him of having ulterior motives, but rather than deterring Eno, the rejection fuels an obsession that sees him dial her number 54 times. Even his friend Steve’s attempt to distract him with a blind date with influencer Lisa falls flat, as Eno rudely dismisses the young woman. Steve, concerned, digs into Agatha’s life and discovers she is married to Ernest, an older man paralyzed from the chest down who's also Eno's patient. Unfazed by the revelation, Eno continues his pursuit until Agatha finally relents, and they begin a passionate, illicit affair that neither can easily walk away from. Ernest, sensing his wife’s distance, hires a private investigator who confirms his worst fears. Confronted, Agatha tries to break off the relationship, but Eno’s pleas and a proposal to run away together keep her tethered, even as she reminds him of her debt to Ernest for rescuing her from life on the streets. Their secret meetings continue, even as Ernest’s weak heart deteriorates under the strain. Eventually, Agatha resolves to end things definitively, telling Eno to lose her number. Crushed, Eno decides to relocate to the United States, but a patient complaint costs him his job, compounding his despair. Just as he is about to leave Nigeria, Agatha calls in a panic—Ernest has collapsed after dinner, and she needs his help. Eno rushes to their home and manages to stabilize Ernest, but the older man, resigned to his fate, declares that his time is up before passing away. With nothing left to keep him, Eze packs his belongings with Steve’s help, sharing a heartfelt goodbye.
